UK mobile networks explained

Every mobile brand in the UK runs on one of four networks. Knowing which one helps you judge coverage and compare like for like.

Networks and virtual networks

The UK has four companies that own and run mobile masts: EE, O2, Vodafone and Three. They're called mobile network operators.

Many other brands rent space on those networks. These are called mobile virtual network operators, or MVNOs. An MVNO's coverage is broadly the same as its host network's, though speeds and features such as 5G, Wi-Fi calling and roaming can differ. MVNOs are often cheaper and more flexible, and many offer rolling monthly SIM-only plans.

Vodafone and Three merged in 2025 to form VodafoneThree. Both brands are still sold separately.

Checking coverage

Coverage depends on where you live, work and travel, and on the building you're in. Before you buy, use the host network's postcode coverage checker for each place you spend time. Ofcom also publishes independent coverage maps.
